An inauguration ceremony for the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR), a 5-megawatt reactor and the first nuclear reactor in Jordan, was held on December 7, 2016, following the completion of the hot commissioning tests by the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) earlier this month. In addition to the reactor, which was constructed on the Jordan University for Science and Technology campus, the project contains service buildings, a training center, and a facility to treat radioactive waste. The facility is expected to enhance nuclear infrastructure in Jordan, and seeks to be established as the focal point in the region as a nuclear research hub and center for the development of human resources. Construction on JRTR commenced in 2009 by a consortium consisting of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Daewoo Engineering & Construction.
