IAEA Spots Nuclear Activity in North Korea

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano has stated that satellite imagery, open-source data and trade-related information indicate North Korea is going forward with preparations for its sixth nuclear weapons test, the first one since September. The Director says that the IAEA has “concrete information that the nuclear program is going ahead." According to 38 North, a North Korea monitoring group, commercial satellite imagery of the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Facility indicates that an apparent resumption of activity (the pumping out of water) at the North Portal, which is the tunnel that North Korea seems to have been preparing for a nuclear test over the past few weeks.
