The Century Foundation has recently published “Order from Ashes: New Foundations for Security in the Middle East,” which is the result of a multi-year project supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The project examines the Middle East’s current regional security environment as well as the multifaceted security threats faced by the region, such as non-state actors, proxy forces, and interstate rivalry and conflict. Al-Sharif Nasser bin Nasser, Managing Director of the Middle East Scientific Institute for Security (MESIS), contributed to this project by providing an assessment of the region’s security architecture, and an overview of the factors that have led to the region’s current state of affairs and the lack of a robust institutionalized security framework.
