The Vice Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), Dr. Kamal Araj, has recently announced that Jordan is considering the development of a High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) and argues for this alternative energy technology’s safety and efficiency. In his op-ed, Dr. Araj addresses several common concerns surrounding HTGRs, including the degree to which their use has been successful in other countries, and argues that many HGTRs in the UK and Germany have operated well, in contrast to the perceptions held be some that their adoption has not been successful. He further writes about several beneficial features of HGTRs that Jordan would take advantage of, including a specific kind of fuel that significantly reduces the risk of core damage, as well as water-efficient cooling. The article concludes with several energy policy recommendations regarding how Jordan could assess and implement energy alternatives.
