Jordan to Produce Yellow Cake by End of 2018

Dr. Khaled Toukan, Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), has announced that Jordan will begin production of yellow cake at the end of this year. The raw material for this effort will be sourced from the 400,000 metric tons of uranium that exist in the central region of Jordan, where an industrial uranium processing facility will be constructed. Small modular nuclear reactors are also in development. Currently, the feasibility of constructing two such System-integrated Modular Advanced Reactors is being studied, with the hope of creating 220 megawatts of electrical capacity. Toukan emphasized that Jordan has the human resources needed for such an effort, and that training is ongoing.
