Saudi Arabia’s First Research Reactor

On November 5, 2018, Saudi Arabia laid a foundation stone for its first nuclear research reactor. According to Saudi Arabia's official press agency (SPA), Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman inaugurated the launching of seven national strategic projects that include establishing the kingdom’s first low-energy research reactor. SPA did not provide further details on reactor design and specifications.

Saudi Arabia has announced plans to expand and diversify its energy capacity by establishing a nuclear energy program over the next decade. Original plans to build 16 reactors have been scaled back and the Kingdom now estimates that it will construct 2 large power reactors.
