Initial Response Efforts to Coronavirus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the new deadly Coronavirus that emerged in Wuhan, China in December, 2019 a “public-health emergency of international concern.” According to WHO’s latest Situation Report, more than 11,000 cases have been reported worldwide, the vast majority of which are in China. The United Arab Emirates is the first country in the Middle East to report a confirmed case on January 29, 2020.

Separately, the Jordan Public Health Forum (JPHF) held an awareness seminar on the Coronavirus outbreak at the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET) on January 27, 2020 in Amman, Jordan.

On February 1, 2020, Jordan evacuated 71 Jordanian and Arab students from Wuhan. The students were placed under precautionary examination at Al-Bashir Hospital in Amman.
