A team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including its Deputy Director General Alexander Bychkov, recently concluded a visit to Jordan as part of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR). In 2009, Jordan was the first country to invite the IAEA to conduct such a review, with follow-up meetings taking place in August 2014 and November 2014 respectively.

Over 200 specialists from around the world are convening on the eastern bank of the Dead Sea to test regional and international capabilities to inspect for a suspected nuclear explosion.

In July 2013, Jordan began pumping water from the southern fossil aquifer of Disi, a $1bn project started in 2009 that involves piping water supplies 325 km to the capital city Amman and other cities along the route. It is widely acknowledged that the project would only be a provisional solution to a long-term problem, considering that the aquifer is expected to last less than 50 years, and Jordan is ranked as the fourth water-poorest country in the world.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) recently published a series of reports that detail the findings of the Verification Pilot Project, a two-year effort that brought together over forty technical and policy experts from over a dozen countries to look at how nuclear arms reduction goals could be supported.
